How much should you feed the fish in your pond?

Fish Farming

There is no single amount that suits every pond. The right amount depends on your fish and on the day. These are the things to look at, and a simple way to keep checking.

What decides how much to feed

Look atWhat it means for feeding
Size of the fishYoung fish eat a bigger share of their own weight than large fish. As they grow the share gets smaller, but the total grows.
Number of fishMore fish in the pond means more feed, and more care.
Weather and temperatureFish eat less in cold or cloudy weather. Feed less then.
The waterIf the water looks poor or the fish are gasping at the surface, do not feed until it improves.

A simple way to feed

  1. Feed small amounts, several times a day, at the same times.
  2. Watch the surface. When the fish stop rising to eat, stop feeding.
  3. Take out any feed that is left over. If a lot is left, feed less next time.

The rule: when the fish stop rising, stop feeding.

Check how the fish are growing

Every two weeks or so, catch a few fish, weigh them and write the weight down. If they are growing well, keep going. If they are not, look at the feed, the water and how often you feed before you simply add more.

Why not just give more?

Extra feed that is not eaten costs money, spoils the water and can make the fish ill. More feed is not always faster growth.
